PJAK and not uranium

Imad Khadduri, Free Iraq

August 24, 2007

.

.
"Iran on Aug. 22 denied reports that they dropped leaflets in northeastern Iraq on Aug. 20 warning villagers to evacuate before an Iranian offensive on Kurdish rebels there, Reuters reported, citing an Iranian government spokesman. The spokesman said the leaflets, which were marked "The Islamic Republic of Iran" across the top and bottom (comment: this may not be so - see below), were evidence of psychological warfare and propaganda, and questioned whether they even existed. He did not say who might be responsible for the leaflets."

However, this came via email from a reliable Kurdish friend:

"The Iranian flyer in original Kurdish version

Unofficial translation of the Iranian fliers distributed to the bordering villages in Qaladiza inside Iraq:
.
Quote:"Our enemies, especially the Americans, are trying to destabilize the security situation in our country, and for this purpose they are seeking the help from a group of agents in Qandil and Khanira areas inside the Kurdistan Region. In this regard, the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran will purge the area from them and restore the peace and stability to the bordering area.
The Iranian troops will be launching air and land military operations in the next few days; therefore, you are requested to vacate these operational areas for your own safety".
.

.
.
.
.
These are other received information from that area:
- The target of the Iranians are PJAK fighters (Iranian Kurds who have launched attacks in Iran from Qandil).

- The "150" families who are displaced currently in Qaladiza did not flee as a reaction to this flier but because their villages were shelled, houses destroyed, livestock killed and orchard/agricultural product were burnt.

- If the Iranian troops would launch land/air attacks in the next few day, as mentioned in the flier, more than "5000" families in Hero, Halsho and Esewa sub-districts are expected to flee to Qaladiza, as stated by the Mayor.

- According to the displaced villagers whom I talked to, fighters are active in the mountainous areas far from the villages and not from inside their villages, yet the Iranian troops are shelling them nonetheless without discrimination."

It is noteworthy that the area concerned, especially that near the village of Hero, has very promising deposits of uranium, as recounted on page 56 of my book "Iraqs Nuclear Mirage: Memoirs and Delusions", excerpt:

"Upon my return from the conference, and on my own initiative, I immediately proposed to Khalid Said that I search for uranium in Iraq. He immediately concurred and assigned Omran Mousa, the faithful and devoted driver, a vehicle, communication equipment, official papers and finance.

I first scoured the mountains in the northeast of Iraq, near the Iranian border. It was around the Kurdish village of Hero, still politically tense, but among the most beautiful natural scenery that I have ever witnessed. I would have 50 soldiers spread around in a circular formation, with me at the centre, fanning along with me as I planted the cups. The yellow uranium ore was even visible on the surface. What was most amazing were the littered and rusted drilling machines strewn over the mountainside. The local old Kurdish men and women spoke of the English lugging these heavy machines on mule backs over very rugged terrains during the thirties, and leaving them there as a witness to the importance of the abundant natural resources of that area.

Prospecting for uranium near Hero, 1976
.

Upon further investigation, it appears that the British had inserted a paragrpah in the infamous 1955 "Baghdad Pact" between the UK on the one hand and Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Pakistan on the other specifically giving the UK the right to explore and mine for uranium near Hero.
