Gaza: With crossings still closed, limited capacity to repair hospitals

Fadi Yacoub, PNN

Jan 22, 2009

PNN – Al Quds Hospital is waiting for its wounds to heal after being heavily attacked by Israeli forces in the last days of the Israeli operation.

Hit by shells, the damage is massive. Windows were shattered, the surgical ward gone, the administration and pharmaceutical buildings destroyed. When Israeli forces opened fire on the hospital it caught fire and 500 patients, refugees and staff were evacuated.

Dr. Walid Abu Ramadan, Medical Director of Al Quds Hospital for the Palestinian Red Crescent, said that missiles rained on patients during the worst night of shelling.

"We were beyond capacity with people seeking shelter and the sick and wounded. The humanitarian situation was so difficult and still is by any standards."

Dr. Abu Ramadan told PNN on Thursday that the worst was trying to evacuate the children and premature infants.

Medical staff functioned on no sleep, as did most of the Gaza Strip, for more than three weeks. "We are trying to re-open parts of the hospital because all of the hospitals are experiencing large crowds. Thousands of people were wounded."

Red Cross spokesperson in Gaza, Iyad Nasser, told PNN today that the recent Israeli military operation was a "strike to the entire infrastructure of the Gaza Strip. The results were terrible on the humanitarian level after we had already been under the long siege."

Nasser said that to close the blown apart windows in the hospital they are trying to use some nylon that they already had. There are efforts to bring much of the material needed through the crossings and there are other countries who can provide assistance to repair what has been destroyed, but the capacity is limited because the crossings are still closed."

For months before the attacks, 18 plus, the Israeli administration has held the Gaza Strip crossings closed, while the Egyptians kept its side of Rafah closed by saying the Israelis were in control.

The Red Cross’ Nasser pointed out that the destroyed infrastructure shows in the people who are displaced. He says there are 52,000. "There are no building materials or supplies for reconstruction to do anything for the rehabilitation of what has been destroyed."

He said, "The crossings did not open for the entry of humanitarian goods as needed. There is no cement, there is no glass, there is no plastic or nylon. We demand that the crossings open so that our people can live with a little dignity."
