More Air Power for Afghanistan

America may not have any extra ground forces to send to Afghanistan. But it can still call in more air power. Unnamed "defense officials" tell CNN that the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln "has moved from the Persian Gulf into the Gulf of Oman so its warplanes can fly missions over Afghanistan." More Air Power for Afghanistan

America may not have any extra ground forces to send to Afghanistan. But it can still call in more air power. Unnamed "defense officials" tell CNN that the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln "has moved from the Persian Gulf into the Gulf of Oman so its warplanes can fly missions over Afghanistan."

The nuclear-powered, 97,500-ton ship carries more than 90 aircraft, including the latest models of the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet. It's the ship where President Bush made his now-infamous "Mission Accomplished" landing in 2003.

American casualties hit a new high in Afghanistan last month. And the country, unfortunately, seems to be returning to its status as a pawn in other powers' game. Monday's deadly bombing of the Indian Embassy in Kabul has been blamed on Pakistan.

After all, "Delhi supported... the Northern Alliance during [its] years of confrontation with the Pakistan-backed Taliban," notes Troy, over at Abu Muqawama.

When the Northerners (Tajik, Uzbek and Hazarah) came to dominate the new government in the wake of OEF [Operation Enduring Freedom], India was a natural partner for the new Afghan government, becoming very involved in aid and reconstruction work as well as efforts to strengthen the capacity of the Afghan Government. In particular, the development of transportation infrastructure, which India is heavily involved in, could go a long way to assisting the economic situation in Afghanistan. On this level, India could certainly be viewed as a strategic target.
