Protests demand swift reconstruction of Nahr el-Bared refugee camp

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine -PFLP

PFLPOctober 14, 2009

A mass rally was held in Beirut's Martyrs Square in solidarity with the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared on Monday, October 12, 2009, demanding that the camp be rebuilt as soon as possible. The rally and sit-in was called for by the Monitoring Committee to Support Nahr el-Bared and was widely attended by all Palestinian factions and forces, as well as a number of prominent Lebanese figures and international solidarity activists. Similar protests were held in Saida and other Lebanese cities.

Comrade Marwan Abdel-Al, member of the Political Bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and member of the higher committee for Nahr el-Bared led a delegation from the PFLP to the demonstration. The demonstration was held to urge an end to the suspension of reconstruction, which took place at the behest of a State Consultative Council decision on August 18 to suspend construction for two months due to alleged potential 'archeological importance' below the camp. The demonstrations urged an end to the postponement and quick action to rebuild the camp, which was destroyed by the Lebanese army in its attack on Fateh al-Islam, a Lebanese extremist group that infiltrated into the camp, in 2007.

The protestors expressed their demands to return to Palestine and the importance of maintaining their camp in Nahr el-Bared until their return to Palestine, with full respect for their civil and human rights. Speakers warned that failure to rebuild Nahr el-Bared affects the entire Palestinian presence in Lebanon, and serves the resettlement and displacement of the Palestinian people and shows no regard for Palestinian civil and human rights.

Lebanese civil society institutions expressed their solidarity with Nahr el-Bared and called for the government to end this delay, as a minimum of what is required toward the Palestinian people in Lebanon, demanding full recognition of the civil and social rights of Palestinians.

Karmel troup performed songs and debkeh at the protest, focusing on the return to Palestine.

Comrade Abdel-Al said to the news media that this protest involves three primary goals - to urge the government to fulfill its obligations to rebuild the camp and overcome all political, legal and administrative obstacles; to build a new relationship between Lebanon and Palestinians in Lebanon; and to call on international bodies to support reconstruction in the camp, particularly calling upon UNRWA to increase services.

He expressed the importance of the symbolic national value of the refugee camp to the Palestinian cause, saying that displacement of Palestinians from the camps serves to undermine the right of return and aid the 'resettlement' of Palestinians. He demanded Palestinians' rights to live with dignity in Lebanon until return, and described the situation in Nahr el-Bared as a humanitarian catastrophe.

Comrade Abdel-Al said further that Palestinians are in Lebanon because of the occupation of our land for more than six decades and that Palestinians are firmly committed to return to our homeland, saying that the targeting of and discrimination against Palestinians only serves to undermine the Palestinian struggle for return and liberation.
