ISIS is latest US ‘bogeyman’ to justify regional ‘War on Terror’ strategy: FSA officer

October 20, 2014 - Free Syrian Army officer Colonel Ismail Ammar said in an interview published on Monday that the US-led international coalition’s current actions in Kobani aim to involve in Turkey in a strategy aimed not at weakening or overthrowing the Assad regime but at making it the primary beneficiary of coalition airstrikes. In the interview with a Kuwaiti newspaper, Col. Al-Ammar (pictured) said that the ISIS is the international community’s current scapegoat of choice, adding that the group is the creation of the Assad regime, which continues to coordinate closely with US and other nations’ intelligence agencies, with Washington needing a 'bogeyman’ like the ISIS in the Middle East in order to implement its 'War on Terror’ strategies for the region....

ISIS is latest US ‘bogeyman’ to justify regional ‘War on Terror’ strategy: FSA officer

Free Syrian Army officer Colonel Ismail Ammar said in an interview published on Monday that the US-led international coalition’s current actions in Kobani aim to involve in Turkey in a strategy aimed not at weakening or overthrowing the Assad regime but at making it the primary beneficiary of coalition airstrikes.

In the interview with a Kuwaiti newspaper, Col. Al-Ammar (pictured) said that the ISIS is the international community’s current scapegoat of choice, adding that the group is the creation of the Assad regime, which continues to coordinate closely with US and other nations’ intelligence agencies, with Washington needing a 'bogeyman’ like the ISIS in the Middle East in order to implement its 'War on Terror’ strategies for the region. The regional scapegoats required to function as Washington’s 'bogeyman’ of the moment change periodically in tandem with US and Israeli policy, he added, saying that Saddam Hussein and Iran had previously fulfilled this purpose which is now allocated to the ISIS.

The senior FSA officer pointed out that in Syria the ISIS has avoided any major military confrontation with the Assad regime, instead focusing almost exclusively on fighting against FSA and other resistance forces in liberated areas, which could then be recaptured by the regime. He added that Assad’s air force had also provided air cover to the ISIS during fighting between ISIS and resistance forces, further pointing out that most of the leaders of the ISIS had been prisoners of the regime. The officer further expressed surprise at the 'international coalition’s’ and international media’s display of empathy with the Kurds of Kobani, contrasting this with the world’s silence and inaction over the regime’s three years of relentless bombing of Kurds in Latakia.

Col. Al-Ammar said that the international community’s decision to hit one terrorist militia while ignoring the infinitely more savage terrorism of the Assad regime and its accomplices was leading many resistance fighters on the ground to stop fighting against the ISIS and adopt a neutral stance towards it since it is now clear that the 'international coalition’ has chosen to side with Assad and to ignore the regime’s continuing aerial carpet-bombing and heavy artillery shelling of cities, towns and villages across Syria.
He added sarcastically that "The current situation needs a traffic policeman to regulate the warplanes so that those of the regime don’t collide with the ones from the international coalition."

Col. Al-Ammar announced that he and other senior FSA officers are launching an initiative to provide for the "Free Officers," those regime military defectors who are now confined in refugee camps or who remain anonymous and homeless in areas around the border without being given any duties. Even the most senior officers with the most extensive military experience are working under the command of inexperienced civilians without training or knowledge of military tactics and weapons, he said, adding that while the FSA has proven its ability to fight and win battles, it requires a clear military strategy and plans.
