Iraq's Present ... Our Future?

balconesfault, Daily Kos

December 21, 2007

As a father of two myself, my heart went out to the recently released Iraqi in this McClatchy News Story (who else?), set free after 15 months of wrongful detention:

Amin said he'd never been a threat to security. He thought about his children waiting for him outside.

"It was a lot of suffering and I lived with very little hope," he said. "I always hoped to hug my son and daughter and to raise them with the right principles. ...I depended on God to get through and now I forget it. It's only a page in my past."

But what was really chilling?

The part of the McClatchy Story that made me think of this particular incident:

The (Kansas) Republican Party is forming a loyalty committee so that it can punish officers who endorse or contribute to Democrats.

Or this one:

A Republican National Committee practice of having people sign a form endorsing President Bush or pledging to vote for him in November before being issued tickets for RNC-sponsored rallies is raising concern among voters.

Or this:

The loyalty pledge to the Republican Party that Virginia voters will be required to sign if they vote in the state's GOP presidential primary on Feb. 12 is another attempt by the party to police the open primary system.

On Feb. 12, a GOP primary voter will have to sign a piece of paper that says, "I, the undersigned, pledge that I intend to support the nominee of the Republican Party for President."

You get near the bottom of the piece, and it tells you that to be released, each detainee ... remember, these are detainees who apparently have never faced any charges ... must recite the following reconciliation oath:

"I, Mohammed Amin , acknowledge the recent signing of the reconciliation agreement, have ushered in an era of peace and partnership between Shiite, Sunni, Kurdish, Christian, Jaysh al Mahdi (the Mahdi Army of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al Sadr ), Iraqi security forces and American forces," he said. "Based on a review of my arrest record, Iraqi government and coalition force leaders have agreed that my immediate release would be beneficial to the reconciliation process. I pledge not to commit any violation of the reconciliation agreement's 12 points, violate Iraqi law or attack coalition forces."

And I think to myself - that's the next step in holding power.  Detain people without charge.  Force them to make a legally binding oath, committing themselves to refrain from opposing the government, in order to be released.  If any of them actually do participate in rallies, etc in the future, you arrest them on the basis of violating their oath.

I'm sure that the Democrats in Congress will send in nasty letters when they finally find out about it.
