Invisible Iraq
Robert Dreyfuss
You'd never know that the prime minister of a nation occupied by 130,000 US troops is in the United States, but he is. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is in Washington to meet President Obama and other US officials today and tomorrow, but the press coverage is weak. And in yesterday's press briefing by Robert Gibbs, the White House spokesman, the issue of Iraq didn't come up at all. Not once.... Sadly, the mainstream media seems to be buying into the idea that Maliki has suddenly transformed himself into an ardent Iraqi nationalist. Don't be fooled. If anything, Maliki has conducted a power grab in Baghdad, arrogating to himself increasingly broad powers that have led many Iraqis to view him as a dictator-in-the-making. But he is still the head of the secretive Al Dawa party, an Islamist political formation that has long had ties to neighboring Iran...

Afghan Resistance Statement
American people should launch productive efforts for the release of their imprisoned soldier

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
...We call on the people of America to hear carefully what their imprisoned soldier says. See the difference of good conduct with an imprisoned soldier by the soldiers of Islam and the so-called advocates of human rights; make serious, meaningful and productive efforts for his release....

"One big, tall Caucasian American"
A detainee who survived a massacre of Taliban prisoners is among those who claim there were American witnesses

Mark Benjamin
Allegations of a massacre near Dasht-e-Leili, Afghanistan, by Taliban forces soon after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan began to surface during U.S. law enforcement interviews with detainees at Guantánamo. Roughly 10 detainees described similar stories of the mass killing in late 2001 by asphyxiation in shipping containers. Some detainees also alleged that U.S. forces stood by but did nothing to stop the massacre, though the number and specificity of those claims remains unclear. The document reprinted below, heavily redacted, records an interview with one detainee who reported seeing a "big, tall, caucasian [sic] American." The Criminal Investigative Task Force, or "CITF," named below refers to an investigative task force drawing on such agencies as the FBI, CID and NCIS...

Gaza artist, survivor finds power in paint
Eman Mohammed
From the entrance of the house, one can observe the whole tragedy. On 6 January 2009, an Israeli artillery shell landed in the front yard of the Deeb family home in the Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza strip. A large, wide hole in the ground and two missing walls are all that remain. Sitting in his wheelchair in the corner, Ziad, 22, is the last survivor of the Deeb family. He lost both legs during the attack, and 10 relatives were killed including his father, grandmother, brothers, nieces and nephews. Ziad choose a different and unlikely way to mourn. He was a graduate of Gaza's College of Fine Arts when Israel's winter invasion began. When it was over, he started drawing -- on wood, on the walls of the city streets, in front of destroyed government buildings, and public squares. Ziad explained that his art is "the best way I can express myself."...

Is the Obama Health Care Plan Really Better Than Nothing?
By BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon
Candidate Barack Obama told us to judge his first term by whether he delivers quality affordable health care for all Americans, including nearly fifty million uninsured. So why does his proposal not cover the uninsured till 2013, after the next presidential election when Medicare took only 11 months to cover its first 40million seniors? Why are corporate media pretending that no opinions exist to Obama's left? And why has the public option part of the Obama health care plan shrunk from covering 130 million to only 10 million, with 16 million left uninsured altogether?...

Iraqi premier suggests US could stay beyond 2011 if Iraq needs the help
Iraqi premier leaves door open to longer US stay

Anne Gearan July 23rd, 2009
Iraq’s prime minister left the door open Thursday to the continued presence of U.S. forces in Iraq beyond the date both countries have set as a firm deadline for the last American soldiers to leave. Although Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said an agreement reached last year would end U.S. military involvement in Iraq in 2011, he suggested that agreement could be reconsidered. "Nevertheless, if the Iraqi forces required further training and further support, we shall examine this then at that time, based on the needs of Iraq," al-Maliki told a Washington audience...

Pay for Play: Brief Glimpses of the System at Work
Chris Floyd
...I was reminded of all this ancient personal history by the recent story in the New York Times about the latest round of corruption arrests in New Jersey. Mayors, councilmen, city, county and state officials, rabbis -- all are alleged to be operating a crime network ranging from international money-laundering to good, old-fashioned cash in an envelope (or even a cereal box) in exchange for government favors. This was not the case of a "few bad eggs," but a veritable platoon of community leaders...

Football game or tear gas and bullets? Palestinians put racist ad to test
Haitham Sabbah
The row over a racist advert of Cellcom - an Israeli mobile phone operator, which shows Israel Occupation Forces soldiers playing football with Palestinians on both sides of the Apartheid Wall, continues. In the Cellcom advert, IOF soldiers on patrol along the Wall stop their army jeep when it is hit by a soccer ball from the Palestinian side of the Wall. A game ensues, back and forth with the unseen Palestinians after a soldier dials up "reinforcements," including two smiling women in uniform, to come and play. The advertisement made by McCann Erickson, part of U.S. Interpublic Group, ends with the upbeat voiceover: "After all, what are we all after? Just a little fun."...

Obama Lies on Two Continents, is Denounced in New York
by BAR executive editor Glen Ford
Barack Obama may be the most effective propagandist for U.S. imperialism in a very long time. But his narrative to Africans is built on blatant falsehoods, and his spiel to Black America is fundamentally dishonest and evasive. Demonstrators in Manhattan declared: "We will no longer tolerate a message from within our community, that the policies of Barack Obama cannot be criticized."...

First steps taken to implement preventive detention, military commissions
Glenn Greenwald
A task force appointed by President Obama to issue recommendations on how to close Guantanamo announced yesterday it will miss its deadline and instead needs a six-month extension, potentially jeopardizing Obama's promise to close Guantanamo within a year. The announcement was made in a briefing given by four leading Obama officials, where the condition of the briefing was that none of the officials could be named (why not?) and all media outlets agreed to this condition (why?)...

Whirring, whirring
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
I met with a friend, to talk about his situation, the situation in general now, how he’s dealing with the pressure, the disappointments, how he finds inspiration… During our coffee he said: "…I have a cat. I’ve had her since I lived outside Gaza. It breaks my heart that I can’t feed her well. I buy food that’s not fit for her to eat. She eats it and gets sick, then eats it again because there’s nothing else for her. But the food is not good for her. You know, we care for cats, pets, too." And spoke of how many are coping with the hell of life here: "It’s crazy how easy it is to buy certain drugs over counter, like painkillers which some people use recreationally, except here they’re being used intensely. Now there are a growing number of addicts, young people, older people, anyone, using pills every day to escape the pain of life here"...

Mousavi's brother-in-law under arrest in Iran: sister
AFP
Zahra Rahnavard, the wife of Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, said on Thursday her brother is among hundreds rounded up by the authorities in the aftermath of disputed elections. Rahnavard said her brother, Shahpour Kazemi, 62, had been arrested more than a month ago and that all efforts to secure his release have failed, the ILNA news agency reported. She warned the Iranian authorities not to publish any "forced confessions" from her arrested brother, a communications engineer...
